From the BBC news, I
want to introduce an article about GPM mission. I picked up this article
because I want to work in the field on space engineering in the future. (Be
careful that the BBC’s article introduced below was updated at 16 January 2014,
before the launch of H-ⅡA-F23
at 27 February 2014. The launch itself is a past event.)
The summary of the article
The GPM Core
Observatory satellite is to be launched by H-ⅡA Rocket in February, 2014. GPM stands
for Global Precipitation Measurement. She is the core satellite of its
constellations in the GPM mission. She will measure the size of clouds and rains
in the large area of the earth. Especially, she has a science instrument to get
the three dimensional images of them. Their observations will enables scientists to predict bad weathers like hurricanes better. Also, they can
understand how water behaves on the Earth and how it causes the climate change.

Reviewing the article
I think it’s natural
that the space engineering have to give the feedback to the society because the
budget comes from the people’s money. I want to think about three questions below
in my four years of my university studies. First, the exploration of our solar
system is able to contribute to the society? Pursuing the scientific interest
is not enough to justify the usage of a lot of government’s money. Second, what
kind of troubles are caused by the launches of the satellites? Today, they are greatly
contributing to the society like GPS. But I guess there should be some problems
caused by the launch of the satellites like the space debris. Third, manned
missions like the ISS project is really necessary? It costs a lot, I want to
know the experiments in the ISS meets its cost.
I am going to think
about these three points and make my opinion based on the grounds in my life in
the university. This is not an easy task because I have to study a lot about
not only technology but also society, but I’ll do as I can to be a space
engineer.
